With Farmer’s Market season in full swing here in Portland, I am blessed with 2 farmer’s market within blocks of my work during the week. Another one on the weekend will be opening in my neighborhood soon, just a leisurely afternoon bike ride away! And this is not including the giant downtown Saturday famer’s market. Boy oh boy, there are no limits to these fertile lands!
Last week I went to the Eastbank Thursday market and got some new treats: garlic scapes and fava beans. We ate them on Saturday along with Susan’s Ribz.

I tend to have mixed results with seitan, so I’m not writing this recipe off, because I’m sure I did something wrong. Possibly over-kneaded it? It was a little foamy texture wise. But seriously, covered in BBQ sauce, what isn’t great? The fava beans were sauteed in garlic and EB. They are a little time consuming, but they were delicious and I’m looking forward to getting some more this week. We also grilled up some garlic scapes, also a new treat. The texture is similar to asparagus and was very delicious. Jim, the budding food critic, said it had a “mild, but distinct flavor”.
Weekend breakfast:

Banana peanut butter pancakes with maple syrup and banana slices and half of a mini watermelon with balled melon, strawberries and bananas tossed in lime juice.
My new favorite snack- I’m just obsessed!

Just simple plain popcorn (I use Garden of Eatin’) with some melted EB drizzled on and then coated with Parma. Oh lordy, I am really digging on Parma! I never thought much of it before, from looking at the ingredients, I even have a similar cheezy topping in my cookbook using cashews. But they have the perfect proportions, making this the best popcorn I’ve had in I don’t know how long. Yum!
Dinner last night:

Local muligrain tempeh with snap peas, carrots, garlic scapes and broccoli served over brown basmati rice. I made a huge container so we have plenty of leftovers. We enjoyed it on our porch, which I spent the weekend cleaning, scrubbing and gardening.
If you live locally, you can pick up copies of The Damn Tasy! Vegan Baking Guide at Food Fight!, Mirador Community Store (why did I not know about this place!? They have every veg cookbook I’ve ever heard of along with all sorts of amazing kitchen supplies, including my new yogurt maker. Adventures with that soon…), and at Veganopolis. Thanks to everyone for your continued support, it’s great seeing you all enjoying my treats!

Comment by Johanna June 4, 2007 @ 5:53 pmI love the way your seitan ribs look! And your banana peanut butter pancakes! Wow! I’ll have to keep up with your blog from now on!
Comment by Carolann June 4, 2007 @ 6:36 pmMmmm, this all looks so yummy, especially that top dinner. Love fava beans. You’re so lucky to have all that veggie stuff going on in Portland – I need to pick up a copy of Damn Tasty! but don’t have a paypal account – any suggestions? Cheers!
Comment by vicki June 4, 2007 @ 6:46 pmHey Johanna, thanks for stopping by!
Carolann, thanks for the note. I’m excited to check out your blog.
Hey Vicki! You don’t actually need a Paypal account anymore. They finally got with it and realized that not everyone wanted an account anymore, so now you can just checkout through them just like any normal online store.
Comment by krispycheks June 4, 2007 @ 7:38 pmEverything looks great here–I share your sentiments about ANYTHING covered in barbecue sauce!! And that popcorn picture reminds me how much I love popcorn–yum! Kris, I so want to buy a copy of your book, but cash is super-tight for me right now, as my job doesn’t start until late August. I hope there will still be copies available a little later! I think it’s awesome that you published it, and I hope it all goes well!
Comment by laura jesser June 5, 2007 @ 6:05 amMmmmm, your breakfast looks delicious. I think I’m going to make that for dessert tonight. I’ve never tried garlic scapes or fava beans. I’m interested in looking for them though. Hopefully I’ll be able to get to the farmer’s market here soon and find some.
If you want a super easy way to pop popcorn, put 1/4 cup or so in a brown paper lunch bag. Fold over the top really tight a couple of times (you can even put a staple in it if you want but I don’t). Pop in microwave for 1-3 minutes depending on your microwave. You want to take it out when there’s about 3 seconds between each pop. I swear, it’s so easy. I learned about it from Alton Brown and now I’ll never buy pre-packaged popcorn again.
Comment by Vivacious Vegan June 5, 2007 @ 6:38 amdo you cut the tips off your asparagus?
Comment by Megan the Vegan June 5, 2007 @ 4:18 pmI love popcorn. I take it in a big bag to work for munchies on nights when we’re not busy. (Or even when we are.) I made some ribz the other night too. Summer just isn’t complete without BBQ ribz.
Comment by Carrie June 5, 2007 @ 8:57 pmIt’s hard to believe the barbecue didn’t taste as good as it looks. I’m going to look for garlic scapes at my farmers market this weekend. I never eat breakfast so I always miss out on yummy pancakes!
Comment by aTxVegn June 6, 2007 @ 10:22 amHow cool that it’s Farmers Market time for you. i just love Portland, btw, and it’s so wicked cool that you are so close to those markets and how totally great as well that yer gonna have one in your ‘hood there!! YAY!
Garlic scapes, ‘eh? Hmmmmm… That’s new to me. i do love me some fava beans and i dunno if the picture is jut not tellin’ it like it was but the BBQ seitan looks tremendous. And, i totally am with you on the BBQ sauce makes everything better!!! Yes, i even have been known to dunk popcorn (PARMA!?!?! Gotta check that out!) in BBQ sauce!
Kris, i love this line:
Jim, the budding food critic, said it had a “mild, but distinct flavor”.
Your weekend b’fast of the banana PB ‘cakes w/maple syrup and banana slices is heaven to me… i might want some carob chips tho, in case you decide to move next door to me someday and want to be prepared!
)
The dinner of multigrain (!?!?!?!) tempeh w/the snap peas & more over the brown basmati rice is right up my proverbial alley. Lookin’ good as ALWAYS!!!
Comment by K June 7, 2007 @ 8:15 pmAww, what a clever thing to do with that little watermelon!
Comment by Leigh June 7, 2007 @ 9:18 pmI love farmers markets. Sadly I’ll be too busy tomorrow to visit ours.
I’ll be on the lookout for galic scapes. How do you like your yogurt maker. How does it work and what do you use for ingredients? Soy milk and cultures?
Comment by Shananigans June 8, 2007 @ 6:31 amLovin’ the H20-melon bowl.
Comment by urban vegan June 8, 2007 @ 7:23 pmThanks for your response, Kris — I’ll go check on it, then. Everybody is really digging your book!
Comment by vicki June 13, 2007 @ 3:26 pmKris, I think you probably got the ribz right–at least the photo looks right. They do come out a little spongy, a texture some people like and others don’t. I’m in the “anything covered in BBQ sauce tastes great” camp myself, but if I’m going to keep working on the recipe to try for a firmer texture.
