Giveaway!

Okay, so I’ll admit, I’m a summer slacker! Who can blame me, there is fun to had that doesn’t involve being on the computer at home.

So, as I accumulate pictures for a giant post, I thought a giveaway would be fun!

One lucky winner will get a free apron! You can see the choices here. There is the “Damn Tasty Vegan” apron, which is brown with a 2-tone green screenprint, or there is the “Vegan Master Baker” apron, which is black with white and orange lettering and nifty silver whisk.

Leave a comment to be entered in the drawing. The drawing will be random, but just to make it fun leave a comment with your favorite foods to pack when you go camping. Jim and I are going to be taking a trip in a few weeks and I need to start planning!

ETA: I forgot to write when it ends! Entries will close on Friday morning and I’ll announce the winner in the afternoon.

Your desserts all look wonderful. I’m so glad to know that yummy desserts can be made vegan and still taste delightful!!

Thanks for your great book!

well, i haven’t gone camping since i became vegan but i know what i’d bring/make if i did go anytime soon. larabars (plenty of apple pie flavor, my favorite!), granolas, pb&j supplies, some hummus along with veggies or rice crackers, potato salad, chili, breakfast burritos or burrito bowls, marinade some tofu before you leave and then keep it in a cooler until you want to make sandwiches. so many more options out there but those are some that sound good to me!

I like to make granola and take that, also the granola bars too. Any nuts and seeds. Bread rolls, fresh fruit, etc. I guess it all depends on how long are you going to be out there and what kind of commodities, like water, stove, etc. you will be having.

smart dogs; granola; vegan graham crackers, chocolate and ricemellow fluff to make s’mores; tempeh chik’n salad to make sandwiches for hikes; trail mixes.. all for now!

Comment by Tania July 18, 2007 @ 4:50 pm

Granola bars - homemade of course! Is that too cliche?

Comment by Mary July 18, 2007 @ 5:06 pm

I like to bring single-serving bottles of soymilk, essentials for vegan s’mores (vegan marshmallows, vegan graham crackers, carob - I don’t eat chocolate, so I substitute carob), Ezekiel® english muffins, veggie burgers (I LOVE Amy’s® California veggie burgers), Weetabix® cereal, Odwalla® Super Protein bars, Larabars®, “portable fruit” (apples, bananas, dried fruit, etc.), and more, depending how long the camping trip is, haha :0)

Comment by VeggieGirl July 18, 2007 @ 5:35 pm

I always have all sorts of dried fruits like pineapple and papaya mixed with as many different kinds of nuts as I can lay my hands on. Then you’ve gotta have your sweet treats (although the fruit is pretty sweet!) like muesli bars (do you call them granola bars in the US?) and fruit cake (’cause it keeps for ages) - both definately homemade.

When I’m tramping I opt for things like TVP or felafel mix with dried vege stock, dried pea and corn mix and rice or couscous (’cause it’s as weightless as you can get and carrying a pack is hard enough as it is!) and good old porridge.

Haven’t been camping in a while though. I feel jealous!

By the way, your blog is awesome…very inspiring.

I have not gone camping while vegan yet, but here’s what I would pack:
Ives veggie hotdogs (+condiments), lots of fruit, cupcakes, Luna bars, nuts and dried fruit (pecans and dried cranberries, yumm!), potatoes to grill (and nutritional yeast to sprinkle on them), poppy seed bagels, corn on the cob (+spices to put on it), sour patch candy, and a big bag of cherry tomatoes.

Comment by samsara July 18, 2007 @ 7:54 pm

Trail mix, pb and bread, fresh fruits, and for cooking - potatoes, corn on the cob, and smart dogs! And take some of your banana bread. I recently made it and it is awesome!

Comment by atxvegn July 18, 2007 @ 8:55 pm

if it’s car camping, I bring hummous and felafel batter (from moosewood). I also bring tomatoes and cucumbers to chop, as well as tahini sauce and dried couscous. the felafel just needs to be fried up, some water boiled to make couscous; and the salad chopped. very easy.

I’ve done lots of car camping- I find that making a stir fry, and then the next day making fried rice (ie, heating up the leftovers) work great, as is making chili, and then putting that inside a burrito (with aluminum foil for structural integrity) for tomorrow’s lunch works wonders.

the only spices I bring when car camping is salt; pepper, sugar, basil, cinnamin, and adobo mix.

also great to bring- dried organic mango. it’s like mango jerky (can be gotten at trader joe’s)

Come on…2/2! I’m felling lucky :]

As for camping, I’ve only been once and it wasn’t “real” camping, but I would bring…corn on the cob, date balls, veggie burgers and almond milk.

I must admit that I’m not much of a camper, but if I were to go camping I would want to take vegan graham crackers, vegan marshmallows, and a Tropical Source chocolate bar, and Tings (I love Tings!). Oh and maybe some soy milk and those little individual boxes of cereal that you can pour soy milk directly into.

Comment by Rachel July 18, 2007 @ 9:59 pm

Favorite trail mix: raw pumpkin seeds, cashews & sunflower seeds–toasted, chopped candied ginger, raisins. Yum!

If you are doing mellow camping (read not backpacking), I love to bring supplies for pancakes. It feels so awesome cooking up a batch of pancakes in the fresh morning air. I always make banana and blueberry ones and just bring a mix all ready to go, then just add non dairy milk and a lil oil. Otherwise instant oatmeal is my breakfast of choice. Chili is my fav for dinners.

I’ve just recently started reading your blog & love it! As for camping food ideas - I wouldn’t be caught dead without my small gas stove. if you have one take some beans and veges along to make your favourite dish. Also - I’d pack lots of hommos and breads, veges, fruits & trail mix (we call it scroggin in NZ).

Comment by Sarah July 18, 2007 @ 10:34 pm

Non-squishable fruit and veggies, already cleaned and cut-up (carrots, celery, apples, rainier cherries, sugar snap peas), lots of peanut butter, mini soy milks, canned vegetarian baked beans, roasted pepitas! Now I want to go camping.

Comment by Brooke July 19, 2007 @ 12:01 am

I almost forgot the canned beans - you gotta have campfire beans!

Comment by aTxVegn July 19, 2007 @ 7:09 am

I like to bring all the usual trail mix-y stuff and then also a chickpea orzo salad that I make that doesn’t require refrigeration. It has chickpeas and orzo, of course, and dill, a little olive oil, lemon juice, garlic, and salt. Yum!

Comment by Cindy July 19, 2007 @ 7:52 am

Hi Kris, I just wanted to leave you a note to say that I’ve made your blueberry streusel muffins twice now and they win my vote as the best blueberry muffin recipe I’ve ever come across!

Hi! Just wanted to get a chance at your giveaway….
We haven’t been camping in a while, and after you mentioned it, it sounds like a fun idea!
Anyways, we used to camp before we were vegetarian, and so had burgers and cheeto balls….now I would say to bring chips and salsa! Especially, since we are from Texas, chips and salsa are a wonderful and easy snack! Spicy is the best! Also, you could pack fresh red tomatoes and have a tomato basil red wine vinegar salad! We love refreshing tomato salads when it’s hot!
Enjoy camping!

Ooh - favorite foods to bring camping: Granola, Beer and Wine (yep!), water, Tofurky Jurky, veggie burgers/hotdogs, and homemade chex mix to munch on all day.

Comment by Crystal July 19, 2007 @ 12:33 pm

I love contests!

I am not a camper, but I imagine easy camping foods would be TVP (so easy to reconstitute), cans of beans (although they may be a little heavy…), dry lentils/split peas (quick cooking), dry oatmeal seems like it would be easy, and maybe some fresh fruit and veggies?? Maybe it is a good thing I have never been camping…!

Camping is so much fun and I’ll bet you guys are having fantastic summer weather for it up there (as compared to Texas). I usually bring pb and bagels (they stay better than bread), almonds, apples, cans of Amy’s Organic Chili (spicy), dried fruit (mango…), individual containers of shelf stable soy milk, granola bars, and some sort of cookie or sweet that will still be tasty if it gets smushed.

Have fun!

Comment by malinda July 19, 2007 @ 4:57 pm

I love to pack some homemade granola bars, trail mix, and some dried fruit.

Comment by Jamie July 19, 2007 @ 6:26 pm

we love making hippie slop–a huge pot of quinoa with onions and garlic and whatever veggies are almost going bad with a bunch of tomato sauce and seitan stir-ins. delicious and perfect after hiking all day! otherwise: farina and brown sugar for breakfast, baked beans on english muffin with fakin’ bakin also for breakfast, falafel mix, veggie burgers if car camping, lots of fruit leather and nuts for on the trail and any kind of vegan cookies. oh, and tings if car camping! hope you have a great time!

Comment by kate July 19, 2007 @ 10:55 pm

larabars, MOJO bars, cereal, travel packs of soymilk, veggie baked beans, soup…probably good I don’t go camping much!

Comment by sarah July 20, 2007 @ 12:01 am

oh, i hope i’m not too late for the draw! my fave camping foods are raw cut up veggies, vegan smores and veggie dogs roasted on a stick!

Comment by michelle July 20, 2007 @ 4:52 am

Oh How fun- a giveaway. I’ve been eyeing all the aprons I see lately. Hmmm lets see, camping food… definitely some sort of quinoa salad (ex- Quinoa spring salad from Vive), hummus and fixins, oh and kabobs are always fun- just marinate some tofu or tempeh and pack some fresh cut veggies, then you can each make personal kabobs and put them right on the grill. Oh and don’t forget to bring some bars if you’re hiking and also a jar of nut butter. Have fun camping!

Comment by Teresa July 20, 2007 @ 8:22 am

If I’m not too late please enroll me in the drawing. I like to take lots of tea camping - because I always need warming up! Insteant oatmeal and Hummus are great, but I think people covered those ones. Lara bars, nuts. Goji berries are good on a hike, too.
